Eddie Alvarez found a willing dance partner in Pat Curran. He just wouldn't leave the dance floor.

Curran decided to stand and bang with one of the world's top 10 lightweights, but wouldn't wilt under a hailstorm of body shots. Alvarez landed more punches and the harder shots throughout to roll to a unanimous decision win, 50-45, 50-45 and 49-46, in the main event of Bellator 39.

Curran, whose cousin Jeff is a former WEC champion, sent a message by going the distance with Alvarez. The Philadelphian moved to 22-2 with the win. It was just the third time he'd been taken past the second round. Alvarez came in riding a six-fight win streak and was fresh off a complete destruction of former UFC lightweight Roger Huerta.

"That guy's got a hard, hard head. He can take a shot," Alvarez told Bellator color voice Jimmy Smith. "I was starting to find my rhythm. He just stuck in there. I wish I had the heart he has at his age. Pat's gonna be a champion, no doubt."

Curran's overall game was impressive. Alvarez, is a very solid MMA wrestler, but anytime he got Curran down, the 23-year-old was able to quickly scramble to his feet. On the feet, Alvarez's movement made it tough for Curran (13-4) to land punches.

Curran is tough as nails. He absorbed dozens of nasty body shots and never went down.

Hawn takes narrow split decision from Good

Rick Hawn's effort won't make any "Best of" highlight tapes, but he fought to a gameplan that scored with the judges. He got a takedown early in the second and one more with 15 seconds left in the fight. That may have been the difference in gaining a split decision win, 29-28, 28-29 and 30-27, over Lyman Good to advance to the Bellator Season 4 welterweight tournament final.

Hawn will face the winner of Jay Hieron and Brent Weedman. They fight next week at Bellator 40.

"He hits hard. I started off a little slow and I should've pushed harder at the end," Hawn said. "[I have] a lot of confidence. [Good's] won the tournament before. Whoever it is, I'm ready for them."

Good cost himself the fight with his inability to get off the mat in the second round. He was taken down at 4:42 left in the round and didn't try a single submission or commit to escaping. Hawn landed nothing of significance, but maintained top control and most times that's enough to win over judges.

In the first and third round on the feet, Good landed some effective jabs, but was hesitant to really commit with big shots or flurries.

Hawn, a 2004 Olympian in Judo, is dangerous in the clinch and Good was clearly avoiding tight spaces.

'Pitbull' with another eye-opening win

Toby Imada has been a handful for everyone in Bellator, but Patricky "Pitbull" Freire showed he's at a different level. Imada, a dynamic submission specialist, chose to stand with Freire. PitbullĀ  landed a super-athletic flying knee, Imada froze in place and then ate a left hook before falling to his back. Pitbull gots the TKO win at 2:53 of the first round in the Bellator Season 4 lightweight semifinal.

Pitbull, 25, looks like a super prospect and may be the only guy under contract with Bellator, who can give the champ Alvarez, a dangerous challenge. Freire (10-1) will face the winner of Lloyd Woodard and Michael Chandler. That semi goes down next week at Bellator 40.

Freire and his younger brother, Patricio have combined to go 25-2 to start their MMA careers.

Saunders makes Lee a bloody mess

Matt Sung Lee was looking for one last shot at some big fights, but he ran into the wrong guy on the feet. Lee had to face last second fill-in Ben Saunders and after 11-plus minutes of fighting he was left looking like a horror flick victim. Saunders' elbows opened cuts over both of Lee's eyes, and blood was flowing from the South Korean's nose forcing a doctor's stoppage at 1:24 of third round.

Saunders, an "Ultimate Fighter" alum, was cut after losing lost two straight with the UFC. He was 3-3 with the UFC, mainly because of poor takedown defense.

At 6-foot-3, he's gigantic for weight class and knows how to use that height and length advantage. Lee, a smallish, doughy looking welterweight tried to stand with Saunders and was in trouble from the opening seconds.

Saunders (10-3-2, 3-3 UFC) closed spaced early and looked to work along the cage. The big guy crushed Lee's nose in the first and ripped open a good-sized cut next to his right eye in the second. So much blood was flowing that it appeared Saunders, who had it all over the side of his head and down his chest, must've been cut too. But it wasn't the case.

Lee's corner begged the physician in attendance to let the fight go into the third round. The doctor relented, but when Saunders landed a huge right elbow out of the clinch with four minutes left in the fight, it was less than 20 seconds later that the doc waved off the fight. The cut over left eye spurted blood quickly and that side of Lee's face was almost covered in crimson 10 seconds later.

Amir Sadollah won the battle of two "The Ultimate Fighter" stars on Saturday night at Ultimate Fight Night 24. Sadollah forced DaMarques Johnson to submit due to strikes in the second round of their bout.

The fight started with an eventful first round. Johnson took advantage of an early slip by Sadollah to get in side control, but couldn't do much with it. Moments later, Johnson caught a kick to get another takedown. That time, he was able to land elbows while on the ground before Sadollah returned to his feet. Johnson threw Sadollah for another takedown before Sadollah reversed, and landed some serious strikes before the round ended.

In the second, the two had a furious exchange early, both landing strikes and coming out with bloody faces. But Sadollah took the upper hand halfway through the round. He got full mount and rained down blows onto Johnson's head. At first, Johnson was able to roll away, but Sadollah stayed close. He regained mount, took control of Johnson's hand and then blasted Johnson with elbows until the bout was stopped at 3:27.

"I am ecstatic with my performance," Sadollah said after the fight. "I'm here not just to look good. I want to be the best and fight the best."

Johnson took this fight on short notice after Duane Ludwig and James Wilks both pulled out because of injury. His record falls to 12-9. Sadollah, who has fought every one of his pro bouts in the UFC, is now 5-2.

Spring is an especially busy time for MMA, with six championship belts from the UFC and Strikeforce on the line in the next three months. With so many fights on the docket, which ones stand out? These are the fights that will keep you warm until the summer solstice.

Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley -- Gilbert Melendez vs. Tatsuya Kawajiri: In his first fight in the U.S., Kawajiri will get a chance to avenge a 2006 loss to Melendez while also showing off his bruising style. Melendez spoiled the American debut of one Japanese fighter in Shinya Aoki. Can he do it again with Kawajiri and hold onto his Strikeforce lightweight belt?

Bellator 41 -- Patricio Freire vs. Wilson Reis: Last year, Freire won his bout over Reis in a decision. Freire earned his berth in the semifinal with a third-round destruction of Georgi Karakhanyan, while Reis got his second chance at Freire with a quick rear naked choke of Zac George. Can Freire follow in his brother's footsteps and create another Bellator highlight?

UFC 129 -- Jose Aldo vs. Mark Hominick: The hype for this event has been focused on Georges St. Pierre's title bout with Jake Shields, including the best commercial that the UFC has ever produced for a bout. That doesn't mean it's the best fight on the card, because a case could be made for the featherweight championship bout between Aldo, the champ and force of destruction, and Hominick, the hometown favorite who is on a five-fight winning streak.

UFC 130 -- Brad Pickett vs. Miguel Torres: Since moving up to Montreal's Tri-Star training camp, Torres has become a more disciplined, but still dangerous fighter. It will be fun to watch what kind of strategy he comes up with for the always-exciting Pickett. Bonus: the fight is on Spike, so you just have to pay your cable bill to catch it.

The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale -- Clay Guida vs. Anthony Pettis: Does anything even need to be written about why this fight will be fun? Pettis, the WEC lightweight champ, will be fighting with a chip on his shoulder after being denied a title shot by the Gray Maynard/Frankie Edgar draw. Guida is eager to stop the Pettis hype train. The two have earned a combined eight fight night bonuses for Fights, Knockouts and Submissions of the Night. This all adds up to this being an amazing bout. Oh, and it's on Spike, so again, pay your cable bill.

UFC 131 -- Brock Lesnar vs. Junior dos Santos: After the loss to Cain Velasquez, Lesnar has a huge question hanging over his head. Can he take a punch? He'll have a chance to show if he's grown as a fighter since UFC 123, and his test will be one of the hardest hitters in the UFC. Even without the build-up from "The Ultimate Fighter," this fight was a must-watch.

Strikeforce in Dallas -- Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum: Just days before the solstice, two of the world's best heavyweights will square off in Dallas. Can Werdum recreate his upset magic and submit Overeem like he did Fedor Emelianenko? Or will Overeem throw Werdum around the cage like he did to Brett Rogers in Overeem's last Strikeforce bout?

by Michael David SmithBrock LesnarFor the second straight week, a UFC fighter got a spot on NBC's late-night schedule, and for the second straight week it was a good PR moment for the UFC, which got to show off an engaging, likable fighter to an audience consisting largely of people who don't buy UFC pay-per-views.

Words like "engaging" and "likable" haven't often been used to describe Brock Lesnar, but that's how he came across on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, where he talked up The Ultimate Fighter and his June fight with Junior dos Santos. Then Lesnar gave Fallon a one-on-one MMA lesson.

Jon Jones' latest stop on the victory tour is a trip out to Los Angeles and Jay Leno's "Tonight Show." He will appear on the famous late night show on Thursday evening at 11:35 ET/PT to talk about winning the UFC light heavyweight belt. The split in his training camp with former friend and training partner Rashad Evans will likely be discussed.

Jones is far from the first fighter to make it onto Leno's stage. Tito Ortiz, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Chuck Liddell have all appeared on the Leno show. But even putting Jones in that company is impressive. All three men have multiple title defenses, movie roles and magazine covers. Now, Jones will join them down that road of stardom that transcends MMA.

by Michael David SmithFormer pro wrestling star Bobby Lashley stepped back into the mixed martial arts cage Friday night for the Titan Fighting promotion, and the good news is he won.

The bad news is that he showed that he's still the one-dimensional fighter with absolutely no cardiovascular endurance that he's always been.

"It was not as good as I wanted," Lashley said afterward. "But it was a victory."

There's tough guys everywhere. Internet Tough Guys otherwise known as Keyboard Warriors. Now there's Twitter Tough Guys. In Las Vegas, my radio station ESPN1100 has Telephone Tough Guys on our text line.

Make no mistake about it, it's the media that sets the example for readers, listeners and viewers. The San Diego Union-Tribune's Don Norcoss put it nicely about many sports talk-radio ( and internet) hosts:

Talk-radio host. You're paid to gab about football, baseball and basketball. You can spew vitriol toward any athlete or general manager but never show your face in a clubhouse.

Throw in mixed martial arts, that's where ESPNRadio's Colin Cowherd comes in. Cowherd does an excellent show and understands that the phony contrarian take works wonders with most listeners. Cowherd's show is based in Bristol, Conn. and he rarely has to face the athletes he critiques. Aaron Rodgers, who was blasted all season long by Cowherd, took hold of the opportunity during a post-Super Bowl interview to bust Cowherd's chops.

Brock Lesnar went one step further when he was paraded around the ESPN campus and appeared on Michelle Beadle's SportsNation show. The 6-foot-4, 275 pound former UFC champ turned back the clock to his wrestling days and scared the daylights out of Cowherd.

The hype train is rolling down the tracks for Jon Jones after he ransacked Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. Don't dare step in front of it. If you suggest someone can give him a fight, you may get screamed at.

Jones is ultra-impressive, but he has a long way to go before he can be given an "era" or called an all-time great. Even Dana White cautioned fans to slow it down a bit.

"After what I saw tonight, it looks like he's like a mile ahead of everybody," White said, "But who knows, man. You never know in this sport."

White has seen young guys struggle in dealing with all the new responsibilities of being a superstar.

"His life is going to change in so many ways starting right now it's actually scary. When you get to this point, I worry about guys," White said.

"He's going to have to make a lot of choices over the next couple of years ? personally, professionally. He's in for a very wild, weird crazy ride right now. And he seems like a guy who's grounded enough and has the right people around him to handle it and go the right direction, but you never know."

Yahoo!'s lead MMA writer Kevin Iole joined us to discuss "Bones" and what he'll be dealing with in and out of the cage.

We're proud to announce an exclusive illustrated story by one of our favourite surf artists; Ron Croci… We were alarmed to hear that Ron nearly 'met his end', due to a serious (and sudden) illness on his recent vacation to Hawaii! But we're happy to say he came through it and has shared his story with us in a series of annotated watercolor paintings documenting his near death experience, the unusual effects of morphine and the beautiful Hawaiian islands he enjoyed and surfed up until falling ill…
